actual client of tour guide in HCMC (HCMC)

i am a commercial airline pilot visiting HCMC from nov. 02 to nov 09, 2009...although well travelled in living part time in asia..i decided to look for an hire a guide because of many friends previous experiences in this very different yet exciting city....i contacted many who adveritsed on craigslist and other sites but decided to use bao/loc after speaking with him on skype and the way in which he listened and came up with various proposals for my trip....i will follow with his contact link and practical examples of how bao has helped me save time and money and see and experience HCMC that would not have been possible during several visits...
http://www.locinvietnam.com
that is his link and now i will give some practical examples:
1. bao met me at the airport and DID NOT charge me for waiting for me...TIP to travellers...get a LANDING CARD before you get into the immigration line...you will have to get out of line and get one of the cards and get back into line...NO ONE TOLD ME THIS... but bao waited for me , hailed the taxi and we both got it and he made sure i was not overcharged with a direct route
2. bao bought for me at his expense until i could pay him back a viet sim card for phone..he preloaded it with the hotel name and number..police numbers, taxi numbers and HIS number ...this is SERVICE ..he found the sim card for 2.00usd with 10 hours talk time...that alone saved alot of money and time
3. bao found my accomodations..i DID NOT want to stay in a HILTON type hotel...WHY would anyone? do that at HOME....bao found me a small modern CLEAN guest house in district 3 which is the local district where i could experience the true HCMC yet have access close by to the tourist traps...my guest house room was large, clean, air conditioned, free WI_FI in room, hot shower en suite, refrigerator, sattelite tv with english channels....all for 17.00usd a day....a BARGAIN..i am so impressed i am helping the owner get listed on TRIP ADVISOR....
4. bao charges 5.00usd an hour..and is available at YOUR REQUEST...i chose to use bao for 4 hours one morning and 4 hours one night...that way he helped me discover restaurants, shopping, and nightlife....bao is available as per your requested times
5. bao has become a FRIEND..we now meet for lunch or dinner or drinks at NO charge..but when i need bao for business, i make that clear and he charges me and i pay him
6. bao is a family man with wife and child..however bao is open minded and can point you in the right direction for OTHER activities...
please contact me should you need more information or wish to verify with me
do HIRE bao...really, he will save you TIME AND MONEY and you will have a GREAT time with a GOOD PERSON

Hanoi - Mai Chau - Vinh - Huong Khe - Phong Nha - Dong Hoi - Dong Ha - Khe Sanh - A Luoi - Hoi An - Da Nang - Phuoc Son - Kon Tum - Buon Ma Thuot - Dalat - Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)
18-day trip with 11-day motorcycling
Motorcycling grading: Moderate to challenging
From US$ 1,951 per person

The legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail was the supply line used by North Vietnam to link North and South Vietnam during the American War. Soldiers, ammunition, weapons and supplies were carried by hand, bicycle and truck for hundreds of kilometers through the otherwise impenetrable jungle that covered Vietnam’s mountainous border with Laos. A testimony to the ingenuity, fortitude and commitment of the northern Vietnamese, the trail slipped from use at the end of the war and was taken back by the jungle. Recent road work that follow original sections of the trail have changed this.
Besides incredible driving, deep in the Vietnamese countryside, this ride takes in the charming ancient trading town of Hoian, Khe Sanh battle site and DMZ. We also take time to stay overnight in a traditional Thai hill tribe and visit to some tribal villages on the way.

Day 1: Arrival in Hanoi

Arriving in Hanoi, you will clear customs and immigration. Leaving the airport, you will be met by your guide, holding a sign with your name on it. He will transfer you to your hotel. The rest of day is free to wash up and rest.

In the evening we will attend the famous Water Puppet Show, with its introduction to Vietnamese history and mythology. At night, you will have a welcome dinner with local delights. Overnight in Hanoi.

Summary
Transfer: 50 mins
Accommodation: Hotel in Hanoi
Meals: Welcome dinner

Day 2: Hanoi city tour

After breakfast we will begin our city tour of Hanoi. At first, we visit to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and the “Uncle Ho” house. After that we head to the unique One Stilt Pagoda, which date from one thousand year ago.

Continue to the Hanoi’s famous Temple of Literature, the first university of Vietnam founded in 1070.

Lunch in local restaurant before heading to the Old Quarter for a relaxing cyclo tour through the ancient part of Hanoi. Perhaps the most interesting area you will visit is the Old Quarter. Here many tiny streets join to sell a huge diversity of products. In the old days, each street bore the name of the product sold – “Shoe Street,” “Noodle Street,” and the like. Today, the streets sometimes sell a variety of items, but often the names are accurate.

After the cyclo tour we will drive to the Museum of Ethnology, which is quite away from the central Hanoi. It features a fascinating collection of art and everyday objects gathered from Vietnam and its diverse ethnic minorities. On our trip we will meet some minority groups – now it is time to learn about them. Overnight in Hanoi.

Summary
Sightseeing: Full day city tour
Accommodation: Hotel in Hanoi

Now, let’s begin our adventure. We will ride on Highway 6 passing extensive farming lands comprising a sea of paddy fields split by tree-lined roads punctuated by limestone karst scenery.

After a light lunch in Hoa Binh Town, the capital of Hoa Binh Province, we cross two short mountain passes then descent to the mountain valley settlement of Mai Chau. Dinner and overnight in a stilt house of the Thai people.
After lunch, we continue on the quiet highway to Dong Loc Intersection, (main junction for supply lines during the war) which is widely regarded in Vietnamese eyes as the beginning of Ho Chi Minh Trail. We then pass through remote back country, close to the border , as the scenery steadily becomes dominated by karst limestone rock formations. Accommodation: Hotel in Dong Ha Town
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8: Dong Ha – Khe Sanh – A Luoi

Continuing west on Highway 9, we will climb into the Truong Son foothills. About 16km from Khe Sanh is the Dakrong Bridge and the road turns winding and narrow. A bit further, we will come to Huang Hoa, once known as Khe Sanh Base, which was established as a forward base by General Westmoreland near Laos to secure Highway 9. There are also two long tunnels and very little traffic. The next 68 km from Hien to Thanh My are on good road with some gentle climbs. Lunch on the way in local restaurant. The last 40km of the day are on an older, bumpier road all the way from Ai Nghia to the charming ancient town of Hoian. Dinner and overnight in Hoian.

Day 10: Hoian – Free at leisure

Hoi An, nestled on the banks of the Thu Bon River. Before the river silted up, Hoi An was one of the most important trading ports in Southeast Asia, and a center for East-West exchange and trade. The rooftops of Hoian retain a magical old world Oriental feel and are a favorite subject for Vietnamese artists. In the early 1980s Hoian’s ancient quarters and historical monuments came under the protection and restoration efforts of UNESCO and the Polish government.

You will spend the day visiting the town of Hoian on your own. Overnight in Hoian.

Summary
Accommodation: Hotel in Hoian Town
Meals: Breakfast

Day 11: Hoi An – My Son – Dong Phu – Kham Duc (Phuoc Son)

Time to hit the road again! We leave Hoi An in the morning and head to My Son, a world heritage site that is the Cham version of Angkor Wat.

Most of the temples are dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva, considered by the Cham as the founder and protector of their dynasties.

From My Son, we will continue along the highway, busy at first, until the road shifts and becomes smaller, although paved. Then the drive becomes challenging, but a lot of fun and progress is far slower.

We will continue driving along the river, but the road itself, new and not very busy, climbs up along a very steep valley with the river rushing below. The river below is dotted with unique rock formations and there are waterfalls along the way. Lunch will be in Dong Phu.

We will continue riding Highway 14 today, finding that traffic is busier than usual. Lunch will be in Pleiku. From here, we ride along the Tun River and up over a pass. Along the way are coffee plantations and the stilt houses of the Central Highland’s largest ethnic group, the Gia Rai. Eventually, we will cross the Nha Rong pass down into Buon Me Thuot, the provincial capital of Dac Lac Province, and the site of the last battle of the Vietnam war in March 1975.
At night we can stop by the beer parlors or sample the local coffee grown in the region. It is far and away the best coffee in Vietnam and worth bringing home. Overnight at the Thang Loi Hotel.
There are said to be about 31 different ethnic groups in Dac Lac, each with their own traditional dress and customs. Some of the villages are known for elephant hunting and taming, some for weaving and other arts.

After lunch in Lak Lake, we continue on to Da Lat. The road is narrow, winding, but not busy. We have three passes to cross – Krong No, Chuoi, and Phu Son. In the afternoon, we will finally arrive in Ho Chi Minh City and the famous Rex Hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax or wander on your own.

We might want to visit the Re-Unification Palace, the former palace of President Thieu and his predecessors. Today this building is a museum and venue for official receptions. Inside you can visit the private rooms of the president, the “War Room” from where the South Vietnamese forces were controlled, and, most poignantly, the room where the North Vietnamese army finally took control in 1975. A second stop is at the Notre Dame Cathedral, built between 1877 and 1883 and one of the city’s major landmarks. Neo-Romanesque in form, Notre Dame is the major seat of the Catholic religion in modern Vietnam of the Sea. Tonight, if weather permits we can have dinner outside at the Ben Thanh Market.
From Cu Chi, we will return to Ho Chi Minh City. Here, we can stop at Cholon, the Chinese market. Tonight you will have a farewell dinner. Overnight in Saigon.
This tour is a must-see for those who are interested in architecture and ancient civilizations. My Son sanctuary was an imperial city during the Champa dynasty, between the 4th and the 12th centuries.

We travel about 50km from Hoi An to My Son sanctuary. It comprises many Champa temples, in a valley roughly two kilometers wide, surrounded by two mountain ranges. It was the site of religious ceremony of kings of the Champa dynasty, and was also a burial place of Champa royals and national heroes. The My Son temple complex is one of the foremost temple complexes of Hinduism in South East Asia and is the foremost heritage site of this nature in Vietnam . Though the complex has been destroyed over time, we still see many majestic ancient ruins of temples in the area.

Day 5:
Hoi An Shopping – Departure: (B)

Hoi An is a silk mecca . The quality and selection are the best in the country, and you'll have more peace and quiet here during a fitting than in Hanoi . Silk suits are made to order within 24 hours for about $35 (£19); cashmere wool is $45 (£25). There are countless shops, and the tailoring is all about the same quality and fast. A good way to choose a shop is by what you see out front -- if you see a style you like, it'll help with ordering. Make sure you take the time to specify your style, down to the stitch (it can come back looking pretty cheap without specifics).

Try any of the shops along Le Loi; to recommend one in particular would be like recommending one snowflake over another. The tailoring is very fast but not always great, so plan to have two or three fittings. Be choosy about your cloth, or go to the market and buy it yourself ( Hoi An Cloth Market is at 01 Tran Phu St. ), and haggle. It's not a bad idea to bring an actual suit or piece of clothing that you'd like a copy of. Get measurements from friends and relatives for good gifts.

Note : Unless otherwise noted, most stores listed below are open from 8am to late evening (around 9pm), but hours can and do vary.

There are also skilled cobblers who make custom shoes at affordable rates. Find them near the market on Tran Phu Street .

Tran Phu Street is lined with art galleries and good pottery and woodcarving vendors. Along the river, lots of places sell blue-and-white ceramics . However cumbersome your finds are, like those lovely Chinese lanterns , shopkeepers are masters at packing for travel and to fit in your luggage, and will do so before you've even agreed on a price or decided to buy. Haggle hard.

Transportation: Hotel - Airport
Activity: shopping
Some goods can be unique and fascinating – old propaganda posters, for example; we found one that exhorted people to plant garlic for export. Clothing includes silks and hand-woven fabrics with a reputation for high quality. Vietnam is also famous for handicrafts including bamboo ware, ceramics and lacquer. There are, too, all the usual holiday souvenirs such as T-shirts and beaded handbags at prices that are hard to beat.

Option for The Spa provides the perfect retreat from the stresses of travel and city life. Inspired by the traditions and rituals of Asian cultures, we offer you a unique environment in which to relax and renew. Sit back, relax and enjoy! It's your holiday after all!

We are dedicated to bringing you the finest natural health products available. From the natural acne cure to female sexual enhancement cream we have a remedy or a treatment for a wide variety of conditions and diseases .Herbal medicines are remedies made from whole plant extracts. They contain all the therapeutic constituents of the plants they are made from. They should, as far as possible be organically cultivated or ethically sourced…..
